Around 2:00 pm everyday I go to this little BBQ place called Big Al's that is just a couple of miles away from Greasy Lake. As I was driving there I noticed that there was a lot of debris in the road that looked like it was from a car crash. But I had not heard of anything that had been happening in Greasy Lake the past couple of days. I thought this was strange so I stopped and I got out of my car to examine the scene a little further. As I got closer I noticed that there was blood all over the road, and there was also a tire-iron that had blood on it as well. This was very strange to me. I knew that Greasy Lake wasn't the best place to hang around, but I also knew that most of the people that went there were either in college or high school. So I took the tire-iron as evidence to maybe find a finger print or use the blood as DNA to find out whose it was.
I took the tire-iron to one of the police officers in the lab and asked him if he would test the tire-iron for finger prints and test the blood for DNA. I left him to his work and made my way up to Big Al's. As I was eating I over heard a couple of college kids talking about what had happened at Greasy Lake last night. I overheard one of them say " As I was trying to get one of them monkeys off my back the other one came at me with a tire-iron and knocked me out cold". So now I know the blood that was on the tire-iron should have a fresh sample of blood, and should tell us whose it was. Then another guy said "They got their payback, we damaged that car like it was a quarter shot at a county fair". So this explained all the debris that had been all over the road. I started putting all the pieces together. The person that hit the college kid with the tire-iron was also the one with the damaged car. I also started to think where was this person when his car was getting sledge hammered and where was the car. If it was beaten up as badly as these college kids say, then the car should not have been able to start. There was a ton of questions I wanted answers to, but first we needed to find out whose tire-iron that was that I found on the side of the road.
I arrived back at the police station around 4:30. I went to the lab to check and see if there was any sort of positive test on the blood or if there was any fingerprints found on the tire-iron. The police officer that was running the test for me said he found a match in the system for a kid named Mike Frye. Mike was a 19 year old kid that looked like he had a little of a rebel side in him. I got the address to his families house and drove there to ask him a few questions. As I was driving there I started to wonder why I even cared about busting this kid, it wasn't like I could arrest him for anything. Then I realized even if I just scared the kid a little bit that maybe he will straighten up. I was almost to his house when I noticed a Bel Air badly beaten up like it was in a car crash. This had to be the car that the college kids were talking about at Big Al's earlier today. As I rolled into the drive way I examined the car a little bit more to see what damage was actually done to it. Everything had been beaten up except the tires. Then a voice started yelling at me "What in the hell are you doing". I turned around and said are you Mike Frye. The kid looked at me and said "Whose asking". I took out my badge and told him that I was Detective Dakota Hill44 with the Union County Police Department and wanted to ask him a few questions about last night. He just looked at me with this scared look on his face like someone was about to shoot him. Then he said " yeah I'm Mike Frye. I told him not to worry about anything that I just wanted to ask him a few questions. He said "OK". I said will the first question is what happened to your Bel Air over there. He told me that it had been beaten up by a couple of older guys around the age of 22 or so. Then I asked him where was he when they were demolishing his car. Then he just stood there with complete silence. I asked him again still no reply. I said I am going to ask you one more time where were you when they were demolishing your car. He started to speak then he took a big grasp of air like it was his last. He said " I I I WAS in the woods". I said why were you in the woods. Then he started to have a melt down. He said " We were only trying to pull a prank on a friend". I said a prank. He said " Yeah me and two of my other buddies were out last night just doing what any normal college kids would do over summer break. Then we spotted a car that looked like our buddy Tony's, but when we got to the car we quickly noticed that it was not Tony. As soon as we know it were in a UFC match with this huge Ogre guy. He was kicking all three of our asses then I. He just paused. I said then you just what? He was still silent so I went to my car to grab the tire-iron, and said then you hit the big Ogre guy across the face with this and knocked him out cold. Is that what happened. He just stood there like a zombie for a couple of minutes then he said " Yeah I hit the guy across the face with the tire-iron. But I only did it because I was getting my ass kicked . It was self-defense". I said self defense, you guys had him out numbered three to one. How is that self defense. I felt like there was more to his story so I asked him to come down to the police station for just a few more questions, and to also give me the names of his other two friends. I really didn't give him a chance to answer me, just told him to get in the car.
The ride back to the station was very silent which made me think that this kid was hiding something. You could tell this kid was very nervous, but for what. From what he had told me so far the only thing he had done wrong was get in a fight, but he didn't want to cooperate with me. This is why I brought him to the station, was maybe he would cooperate with me more here than at his house. When we got back to the station I asked one of the police officers to go get me Mikes other two friends Digby Reynolds and Jeff Green, and bring them down to the station for questioning. First I wanted to see if Mike would talk to me a little more so I brought him into my office to make him feel a little more comfortable than questioning him in a room. He seemed to be a little more comfortable so I asked him to tell me what happened after he knocked this big Ogre guy out with a tire-iron. He said " After we knocked this guy out his girlfriend started running at us so the first thing we thought to do was run in the woods to hide. I said why didn't you all just run in the car and speed out. He said" Will that was problem number one when we were getting out of the car I dropped the keys and couldn't find them because it was so dark outside". I said so that explains why your car was so badly beaten up. Then I asked him how he got out of the woods to drive the car home. Then Mike threw me for a loop that even Sherlock Holmes would be blind sided by. He said" Detective there is something that I need to tell you". I said what is it Mike. He said" When we were in the woods hiding from these college kids I came across something that was very slimy. At first I thought it was just a log or big patch of weeds, but then I noticed it was a dead body". Now we had a murder case on our hands.
I told Mike that I wanted him to take me to the place that he found this dead body so that my team and I could quickly start investigating this murder. As we were leaving Mikes other two friends Digby and Jeff had arrived and I told them to hop in the car with me . I asked Mike how long he thought the body had been there, and he said he thought it had been there for at least a couple of weeks if not longer. We arrived at Greasy Lake and Mike directed us towards the dead body. As we came up to the body you could tell it had been there for a while because bugs had eaten off half off this persons face. I told the boys to go stand by my car while my team and myself looked around the scene for some type of evidence. While this was happening I had the rest of my team take the body down to station and take the body to the lab. I knew it would probably be a couple of days before we had any positive test come back on the body so I started to think about anyone that could have dumped this body off here. I knew that most of the people that came to Greasy Lake were around Mikes age, so I went up to where Mike and his friends were standing and asked them if they had seen any shady characters around or if they had just seen anything out of the ordinary. The three boys looked at each other and said" Now that you mention it yesterday before we left there was these two girls around the age of 25 or 26 that were asking about a guy named Al. They said they just told the girl they had not seen anyone and just slowly left the scene. I asked them to give me a description of the two girls and what kind of car they were driving. They said both girls had on tight jeans with stiletto heels and drove a red mustang convertible. The next thing that I needed to do was find these two girls and ask them about Big Al. Even though we had no idea who the body was, asking these girls about big Al would put us in the right direction.
First I needed to figure out where these two girls lived or worked. So I told Mike and his friends if they saw these two girls to get their names or any information that would be helpful for me and my team to use. I then started riding around town hoping I would get lucky and spot the red Mustang that Mike and his buddies described. But after a couple hours of riding around I decided to call it a day, and hit hard bright and early tomorrow. Then I got a call from one of the members on my team telling me that they had found someones idea about 50 yards from where the body was found. They told me that the name on the ID was tough to make out and to meet them back at the station. As I arrived back to the station I first went to the lab to check and see if we got any positive test on the body back yet, and my lab crew told me that they had not got any positive test back yet and to check in with them in the morning. I then made my over to my office where I saw the ID that had been found at the crime scene. The name on the ID read Albert Ferguson. I had no idea if Albert was the one murdered or if Albert was the murder. I couldn't make this assumption because the body we found, half his face was gone from where the bugs had eaten it off. I now needed to find these two girls more than ever so we could know if this dead body was Al or not. I also knew that we were probably not going to find these two girls this late at night, so I told my team to go home and that we would pick up where we left off bright and early tomorrow morning.
I arrived at the station around 6:00 am that morning, and the only thing I had on my mind was putting a close on this case today. As soon as the rest of my crew arrived I immediately put all our patrol men on duty to find this red Mustang car. Finding this car and these two girls was a very important part to this case.
It was around 11:00 am and there was still no sign of the red Mustang. Then I got a call from one of our patrol men saying they had a red Mustang pulled over down on Reynolds street which is about 10 minutes away from Greasy Lake. I was about 15 minutes away from where the patrol men had this Mustang pulled over so I asked him to wait for me to get there before he did anything. When I got to Reynolds street I pulled up next to the red Mustang to first make sure that it was a girl driving the car, and second to ask the young lady if she knew anyone by the name of Albert Ferguson or better known as AL. The young lady said" Yeah I know Al he lives in the apartment above me over there at Eagle Ridge". I then asked her if she would mind coming down to the station so I could ask her a few questions. She said that was ok and asked me if something was wrong with Al. I told her to just follow me and I would explain everything at the station. I first took her to the lab to see if she recognized the dead body or any type of clothing on the body. As she first glanced at the body she started screaming and yelling " Oh my God Al Al". I said are you sure this is Albert Ferguson. She turned and looked at me still screaming and yelling, and said" Yes I'm sure because that was the last thing I saw him wearing". I said when was the last time you saw Al. She said" About a week ago". I said OK. Then I asked her to come to my office so I could ask her a few questions. When we got into my office I just asked her just up why she was looking for Al two days ago up at Greasy Lake. She told me that she had been looking for Al for a couple of days. She said that they were pretty goods friends and hung out frequently. She also said Al liked to go up to Greasy Lake and hang out from time to time, but the group that he hung around was a tough crowd. I asked her if there was anyone specific that she thinks might have done this to Al. She said" Yes there is guy who drives a Chevy a very rough looking character. He and Al got in a pretty heated exchangement about a week ago". I asked her if she had any idea about what that heated exchangement was about, and she told me that it was usually about drugs or money. I then asked her to give me a description of this guy. The young lady described this guy to be freakishly large almost like a ogre, and that he had Dark Brown hair and he also always wore a Cardinals hat. After she described this guy it sounded a lot like the guy Mike and his buddies got in a fight with. I knew where to find this guy and it was also around 2:00 pm anyways. So I made my way down to Big Al's like I do everyday except for today I was going there for another reason.
As I pulled up to Big Al's I saw the big ogre standing outside. I wasn't really sure how I was going to ask this guy if he knew Albert so I just went for it. I went straight up to him and told him that I was Detective Dakota Hill44 with the Union County Police Department and that I wanted to ask him a few questions about the murder of Albert Ferguson. He just looked at me and said" What about it". I said will I have people telling me that you are the one who that has killed him. He said " I don't know nothing about that. I told him that I beg to differ and to get his ass in the car. Surprisingly he did and I made my way back to the station. The whole ride back this little punk was telling me how I would regret this and wait tell he saw me out the street. I just didn't pay any attention to him. We had arrived back at the station and I immediately took this guy to one our interagating rooms. I did not want him to feel comfortable at all. I first asked this guy what his name was and he told me his name was Alex Burke. I then asked him how he knew Albert. He said "Albert use to hangout with his crew". I asked what happened why did Albert stopping hanging around them? He said "he just did". I then began to tell him that we had finger prints of his that were on Alberts body. I said this to maybe trick him and maybe he would come clean. He told me that he wasn't buying that bullshit he knows how this detective thing goes. I realized this guy knew how to handle himself and I was probably not going to any information from him, but I just had a hunch that he was the killer. I had to find some way to get him to come clean or I would have to realize this guy. Then I remebered the tire-iron that Mike used to knock this guy out with the other night. I knew it was a long shot but maybe the blood that was on the tire-iron would match with any of the blood found on the clothes of Alberts body. I went down to the lab and asked them to run test for the blood on the tire-iron, and the blood that was on Alberts jacket to see if they matched. A couple hours later one of the members on my team that was working in the lab came into my office and told me they found a match with both blood samples. I then knew we got the guy we were looking for. I then walked down to the room that Alex Burke was sitting in and told him that he was under arrest for the murder of Albert Ferguson, and then I read him his Miranda Rights. I let one of the officers on duty take him down to cell. I then went to my office and drank to my victory.
Congrats on your arrest. It seems like you had quite an individual on your hands. Good to know that there are people out there that believe in not giving up so we can keep people like him off of our streets.
