The Mysterious case of Trifles

It was December 5th and it was a very crisp and cold morning. I was called a couple days ago about a case that many thought was very strange. The man who called me was George Henderson; he was the County Attorney for Polk County. When Mr. Henderson called me he told me that he had a case on his hands that he thought was out of his reach. I then asked him to tell me everything he knew about the case so I could get caught up to speed.

When Mr. Henderson and I were talking he told me that he and the rest of the crew that were working on the case thought that a woman by the name of Minnie Wright killed her husband John Wright. He then began to tell me that Mr. Wright was killed by someone who put a rope around his neck. I then asked where was his body found and he told me it was found in his bed where he and his wife slept. He also told me that when they asked his wife if she was in the same bed with him that night that she said, yes. But then she told them that she was a sound sleeper and did not hear anything. I then told Mr. Henderson that I had heard enough and would be there as quickly as possible, and that's what brings us here today.

As I said before it was a very cold morning in Polk County. It was so cold that Mr. Henderson sent one of his men down to the crime scene to build us a fire before we got there. I met Mr. Henderson and the Sheriff Henry Peters at the crime scene around 7:00 that morning. We exchanged words for a minute, and then we started into the case. I told them that before I met with Minnie Wright I wanted to speak with anyone that she was friends with. Sheriff Peters spoke up and said that she was really a very shy woman, but if she were friends with anyone it would have been Mrs. Hale. I told them to take me to Mrs. Hales place so that I could ask her a few questions about Minnie.

When we arrived at Mrs. Hales place I saw that her and her husband were already up working on their farm. I went up to the couple and introduced myself. I began to tell them that Mr. Henderson called me down here to help him in his investigation. I also told them that I would like to talk to Mrs. Hale about Minnie for a second. Mrs. Hale and I walked into her house while the men talked outside. Mrs. Hale told me to have a sit and she then gave me a cup of coffee. She asked me what I wanted to know about Minnie. I said well for starters how was her behavior. She told me that Minnie's behavior was somewhat odd. I asked her to elaborate. Mrs. Wright said that when Minnie was younger and single that she was always upbeat and happy. Now she said she just acts lonely and out of place. I then asked her about Mr. Wright. She said that she didn’t know Mr. Wright as well as she knew Minnie, but from what she had seen of him she thought he was an honest man. I then asked her if she thought Minnie killed Mr. Wright. She said NO! I was a caught a little off guard by her response so I decided that it was time for me to leave. I told Mrs. Hale thanks for her time and also thanks for the coffee. I also told her that if she had anything else to say about Minnie to come by the saloon I was staying at and we would talk. All she said was ok.

I walked outside to talk with Mr. Henderson and the others, but I felt very queer from the conversation I had with Mrs. Hale. Mr. Hale asked if I got the information I was looking for, and I said kind of. We then went back to the crime scene so I could look at it for the first time. When we walked in Mr. Hale went over his story again so I could kind of visualize everything that he saw. As he was talking I walked around the house to see if I could see again that would catch my attention. Then I spotted a birdcage that had been beat up. I said Mr. Henderson what happened to the birdcage.  He quickly turned around and said that a cat ate the bird and bent up the cage. I immediately told him that there was no way that a cat caused this much damage to a birdcage. I mean this cage looks like someone took a baseball bat to it. He said will now that you mention it does look very odd. I asked him who spotted the birdcage first and he told me that Mrs. Hale and Mrs. Peters. I looked at Mr. Hale and asked him if he wouldn’t mind going to get his wife and bringing her down here. He said no sir I do not mind. As we were waiting on Mr. and Mrs. Hale to get back, Mr. Henderson told me to come up stairs and look at the rope that killed Mr. Wright. As I was observing the scene I could not help but wonder how Minnie did not wake up when her husband was being murdered. I mean the man would have been struggling and gasping for air. I just can’t put my mind around how you wouldn’t hear that happening, unless she was the murderer.

At this time I heard Mr. and Mrs. Hale come in the house and we all walked down stairs to meet them. When we got downstairs I picked up the cage and asked Mrs. Hale where she first spotted the cage. She told me that she spotted it in the cupboard over there by the stove. I didn’t say it at the time but I thought it was very strange for a birdcage to be in a cupboard. I then asked her where the bird was. She then looked at me in a very queer way like I said something that bothered her. I asked her again where the bird was, and she said the cat got it. I then asked if Minnie had a cat. Mrs. Hale said no I don’t think so. I said, will how could the cat have gotten the bird if she didn’t have one. She just said I don’t know. I then just looked at Mr. Henderson and told him to take me where Minnie was staying. I said were obviously not getting anywhere standing here all day.

We arrived at the sheriff’s house where Minnie was staying. The whole ride there I was trying to picture in my head what Minnie would look like, but when I first saw here all my pictures were wrong. Minnie looked like she had no idea what was going on. She was a rather skinny woman, but kind of rough looking to say the least. You could tell that in her younger days she was a beautiful woman, but father time had seem to get to her. She also seemed very stressed out, which who in this position wouldn’t be stressed out. I approached Minnie very gingerly but I still seemed to kind of startle her. I introduced my self to her and told her why I was here, but there was no reply. I saw that she was sewing and started to ask her questions about that. I thought maybe if I eased into interrogating her she might open up a little, and she did. At first all we talked about was all the quilts she had ever made. She told me how each quilt had a different meaning. I asked her to elaborate. She said will I made a quilt for every important day or event I was every apart of. She then started to tell me about all the days and events that were so important to her. But as she keeps naming them I noticed that they were all from her younger days. None of them were from her marriage. Then we decided to walk outside and get some fresh air. As we were standing a little blue jay sat on a stump right next to us and that seem to make Minnie a little happier. I asked her if she liked birds, and she said oh yes. I then asked if she ever had a bird herself, and she just kind of looked at me. I then said so you never had a bird. Her response was yes I did have a bird once. I then proceeded to tell her about the cage I found in her house, and asked her what had happened to it. She said her husband John had destroyed it a couple of days ago. She said that John got mad her because she didn’t have dinner ready yet. I then asked why would he take it out on the birdcage. Minnie then began to tell me that John had hated her because she could not provide him with a child, and that he took it out on the bird and birdcage because he knew that she loved that bird more than him. I then just asked her if she murdered her husband. For a second there was no reply, but then Minnie said the only reason I am telling you this is because I want to feel normal again. She said she wanted the life that she used to have even if that meant dying. Minnie then proceeded to tell me that she did in fact kill her husband that night. She said that she killed him because he had basically already killed her. I asked how she did it. She told me that when he was sound asleep she eased the rope around his neck and just watched him die. At this time I think Minnie knew she was in trouble, but I also think that for the first time in a long time she felt free.

I called for Mr. Henderson to come over where Minnie and myself were standing. I told Mr. Henderson everything that Minnie had just told me. He looked shocked to say the least. He then asked me how I got her to speak. My reply was that she was just ready, she was just tired of feeling locked up. He then thanked me for the work I had done and gave me a basket of walnuts for appreciation. I told him that the only way he could ever pay me back was by letting Minnie Wright go. I said she was a woman with many problems, but her biggest problem was her husband. Mr. Henderson didn’t say anything, he just looked at me and walked away.

Ophelias Questionable Death

It was a dark gloomy day when Ophelia was buried. It was also very bizarre. The first bizarre moment was when the priest would not perform a ceremonial burial for Ophelia because of her questionable death. Then out of no where Laertes Ophelia's brother jumps in the grave and picks up the dead body of Ophelia. As Laertes holds his sister in his hands he demands to the priest that he gives her a ceremonial burial. Then, the second bizarre moment was when Hamlet leaps into the grave, announcing that he will die with Ophelia. As all this is happening it makes you wonder if Ophelia Killed herself, or did someone that was at her funeral kill her. Since no one had any of these answers I decided to find them out on my own.

The first thing that I needed to do was find out who was close to Ophelia and ask them some questions about who they thought might have killed her. The only person that was left in her family was her brother Laertes. Her father had been murdered some time ago by Hamlet, but no one could ever prove that he was the murder. So that raised the question did Hamlet kill Ophelia and make it look like a suicide? This very well could have happened, but we needed to keep a open mind if we were going to find the real murderer.

The person I wanted to talk to first was her brother Laertes. Since Laertes was around Ophelia almost everyday, he had to of seen some act of madness by Ophelia before her death. So I decided to go to Laertes palace and ask him what he thought of his sisters death. At first Laertes was very angry and did not want to talk to me. But after I told him that I was only here to find out who killed his sister he began to calm down. After he felt comfortable with me, I asked him who he thought might have killed Ophelia and why. He told me that he thought it was a suicide, and that she killed herself because of her fathers death. I then proceeded to ask him if he thought Hamlet killed his father. He then became very angry again and told me to never talk about his father around him. Laertes then just walked off without saying a word. I was beginning to think everyone in the kingdom was becoming mad.

As Laertes was walking off a voice appeared screaming, but I could not make out what they were saying. I waited until Laertes was out of the room to ask the voice to speak again but there was no reply. I now started to wonder if I was becoming mad.

Since I got nowhere with Laertes I decided that I would next ask Hamlet what he thought of Ophelia's death. As I was making my way to Hamlets palace the voice appeared again, and then I saw someone moving up ahead of me. I ran to this person, but when I got there I noticed it was a ghost. As I kept looking at the ghost I realized that it was Ophelia. I asked the ghost to speak but there was no reply. Then all of a sudden it vanished. I started to become very frightened, and wondered if there was something wrong with me. I decided that I had had enough for one night and would question Hamlet in the morning.

I was woken up the next morning by screams coming from the town. I walked outside to see what all the madness was about. Then I noticed that people were running to the Kings palace. I wondered what this was all about so I made my way up to where everyone was standing and asked a fellow friend of mine what was wrong. He then looked at me with this mad look in his eyes and said have you not heard that the King, Queen, Hamlet, and Laertes are all dead. I was immediately tooken by this and became very outraged. I now had no one to question about Ophelia's death.  Since there was no way I could proceed with my investigation I decided that I would walk the platform of the castle to clear my mind. As I was walking I heard a noise that sounded like a cry. So I followed the noise to a room that was just right around the corner. As I approached the room I noticed that it was Ophelia's ghost that was crying. I went up to the ghost very carefully and asked the ghost what was wrong. The ghost did not reply. I then asked the ghost one more time what was wrong, but with a more stern voice this time. Then out of nowhere the ghost turned around and started to sing a song. In her song she talked about the day she died. She sang about how no one in her life loved her anymore, and she also talked about the death of her father. Then the ghost spoke of her love for Hamlet and how she wanted to be with him for the rest of her life. Then the last part of her song she said "It was a cold and gloomy day when I decided to take my life away".  Then after the ghost sang her song she just vanished never to be seen again.

I was stunned by what I just witnessed. I was also very sad as well. I was sad because a beautiful person took her life because of the madness from others. Ophelia must have really felt neglected and unwanted by the ones who loved her the most, for her to take her own life. I also decided that I would not talk of this day ever to anyone. I decided this because I was positive that if I told people of the actions I just witnessed they would think that I was becoming mad myself.

Greasy Lake File

Around 2:00 pm everyday I go to this little BBQ place called Big Al's that is just a couple of miles away from Greasy Lake. As I was driving there I noticed that there was a lot of debris in the road that looked like it was from a car crash. But I had not heard of anything that had been happening in Greasy Lake the past couple of days. I thought this was strange so I stopped and I got out of my car to examine the scene a little further. As I got closer I noticed that there was blood all over the road, and there was also a tire-iron that had blood on it as well. This was very strange to me. I knew that Greasy Lake wasn't the best place to hang around, but I also knew that most of the people that went there were either in college or high school. So I took the tire-iron as evidence to maybe find a finger print or use the blood as DNA to find out whose it was.

I took the tire-iron to one of the police officers in the lab and asked him if he would test the tire-iron for finger prints and test the blood for DNA. I left him to his work and made my way up to Big Al's. As I was eating I over heard a couple of college kids talking about what had happened at Greasy Lake last night. I overheard one of them say " As I was trying to get one of them monkeys off my back the other one came at me with a tire-iron and knocked me out cold". So now I know the blood that was on the tire-iron should have a fresh sample of blood, and should tell us whose it was. Then another guy said "They got their payback, we damaged that car like it was a quarter shot at a county fair". So this explained all the debris that had been all over the road. I started putting all the pieces together. The person that hit the college kid with the tire-iron was also the one with the damaged car. I also started to think where was this person when his car was getting sledge hammered and where was the car. If it was beaten up as badly as these college kids say, then the car should not have been able to start. There was a ton of questions I wanted answers to, but first we needed to find out whose tire-iron that was that I found on the side of the road.

I arrived back at the police station around 4:30. I went to the lab to check and see if there was any sort of positive test on the blood or if there was any fingerprints found on the tire-iron. The police officer that was running the test for me said he found a match in the system for a kid named  Mike Frye. Mike was a 19 year old kid that looked like he had a little of a rebel side in him. I got the address to his families house and drove there to ask him a few questions. As I was driving there I started to wonder why I even cared about busting this kid, it wasn't like I could arrest him for anything. Then I realized even if I just scared the kid a little bit that maybe he will straighten up. I was almost to his house when I noticed a Bel Air badly beaten up like it was in a car crash. This had to be the car that the college kids were talking about at Big Al's earlier today. As I rolled into the drive way I examined the car a little bit more to see what damage was actually done to it. Everything had been beaten up except the tires. Then a voice started yelling at me "What in the hell are you doing". I turned around and said are you Mike Frye. The kid looked at me and said "Whose asking". I took out my badge and told him that I was Detective Dakota Hill44 with the Union County Police Department and wanted to ask him a few questions about last night. He just looked at me with this scared look on his face like someone was about to shoot him. Then he said " yeah I'm Mike Frye. I told him not to worry about anything that I just wanted to ask him a few questions. He said "OK". I said will the first question is what happened to your Bel Air over there. He told me that it had been beaten up by a couple of older guys around the age of 22 or so. Then I asked him where was he when they were demolishing his car. Then he just stood there with complete silence. I asked him again still no reply. I said I am going to ask you one more time where were you when they were demolishing your car. He started to speak then he took a big grasp of air like it was his last. He said " I I I WAS in the woods". I said why were you in the woods. Then he started to have a melt down. He said " We were only trying to pull a prank on a friend". I said a prank. He said " Yeah me and two of my other buddies were out last night just doing what any normal college kids would do over summer break. Then we spotted a car that looked like our buddy Tony's, but when we got to the car we quickly noticed that it was not Tony. As soon as we know it were in a UFC match with this huge Ogre guy. He was kicking all three of our asses then I. He just paused. I said then you just what? He was still silent so I went to my car to grab the tire-iron, and said then you hit the big Ogre guy across the face with this and knocked him out cold. Is that what happened. He just stood there like a zombie for a couple of minutes then he said " Yeah I hit the guy across the face with the tire-iron. But I only did it because I was getting my ass kicked . It was self-defense". I said self defense, you guys had him out numbered three to one. How is that self defense. I felt like there was more to his story so I asked him to come down to the police station for just a few more questions, and to also give me the names of his other two friends. I really didn't give him a chance to answer me, just told him to get in the car.

The ride back to the station was very silent which made me think that this kid was hiding something. You could tell this kid was very nervous, but for what. From what he had told me so far the only thing he had done wrong was get in a fight, but he didn't want to cooperate with me. This is why I brought him to the station, was maybe he would cooperate with me more here than at his house. When we got back to the station I asked one of the police officers to go get me Mikes other two friends Digby Reynolds and Jeff Green, and bring them down to the station for questioning. First I wanted to see if Mike would talk to me a little more so I brought him into my office to make him feel a little more comfortable than  questioning him in a room. He seemed to be a little more comfortable so I asked him to tell me what happened after he knocked this big Ogre guy out with a tire-iron. He said " After we knocked this guy out his girlfriend started running at us so the first thing we thought to do was run in the woods to hide. I said why didn't you all just run in the car and speed out. He said" Will that was problem number one when we were getting out of the car I dropped the keys and couldn't find them because it was so dark outside". I said so that explains why your car was so badly beaten up. Then I asked him how he got out of the woods to drive the car home. Then Mike threw me for a loop that even Sherlock Holmes would be blind sided by. He said" Detective there is something that I need to tell you". I said what is it Mike. He said" When we were in the woods hiding from these college kids I came across something that was very slimy. At first I thought it was just a log or big patch of weeds, but then I noticed it was a dead body". Now we had a murder case on our hands.

I told Mike that I wanted him to take me to the place that he found this dead body so that my team and I could quickly start investigating this murder. As we were leaving Mikes other two friends Digby and Jeff had arrived and I told them to hop in the car with me . I asked Mike how long he thought the body had been there, and he said he thought it had been there for at least a couple of weeks if not longer. We arrived at Greasy Lake and Mike directed us towards the dead body. As we came up to the body you could tell it had been there for a while because bugs had eaten off half off this persons face. I told the boys to go stand by my car while my team and myself looked around the scene for some type of evidence. While this was happening I had the rest of my team take the body down to station and take the body to the lab. I knew it would probably be a couple of days before we had any positive test come back on the body so I started to think about anyone that could have dumped this body off here. I knew that most of the people that came to Greasy Lake were around Mikes age, so I went up to where Mike and his friends were standing and asked them if they had seen any shady characters around or if they had just seen anything out of the ordinary. The three boys looked at each other and said" Now that you mention it yesterday before we left there was these two girls around the age of 25 or 26 that were asking about a guy named Al. They said they just told the girl they had not seen anyone and just slowly left the scene. I asked them to give me a description of the two girls and what kind of car they were driving. They said both girls had on tight jeans with stiletto heels and drove a red mustang convertible. The next thing that I needed to do was find these two girls and ask them about Big Al. Even though we had no idea who the body was, asking these girls about big Al would put us in the right direction.

First I needed to figure out where these two girls lived or worked. So I told Mike and his friends if they saw these two girls to get their names or any information that would be helpful for me and my team to use. I then  started riding around town hoping I would get lucky and spot the red Mustang that Mike and his buddies described. But after a couple hours of riding around I decided to call it a day, and hit hard bright and early tomorrow. Then I got a call from one of the members on my team telling me that they had found someones idea about 50 yards from where the body was found. They told me that the name on the ID was tough to make out and to meet them back at the station. As I arrived back to the station I first went to the lab to check and see if we got any positive test on the body back yet, and my lab crew told me that they had not got any positive test back yet and to check in with them in the morning. I then made my over to my office where I saw the ID that had been found at the crime scene. The name on the ID read Albert Ferguson. I had no idea if Albert was the one murdered or if Albert was the murder. I couldn't make this assumption because the body we found, half his face was gone from where the bugs had eaten it off. I now needed to find these two girls more than ever so we could know if this dead body was Al or not. I also knew that we were probably not going to find these two girls this late at night, so I told my team to go home and that we would pick up where we left off bright and early tomorrow morning.

I arrived at the station around 6:00 am that morning, and the only thing I had on my mind was putting a close on this case today. As soon as the rest of my crew arrived I immediately put all our patrol men on  duty to find this red Mustang car. Finding this car and these two girls was a very important part to this case.

It was around 11:00 am and there was still no sign of the red Mustang. Then I got a call from one of our patrol men saying they had a red Mustang pulled over down on Reynolds street which is about 10 minutes away from Greasy Lake. I was about 15 minutes away from where the patrol men had this Mustang pulled over so I asked him to wait for me to get there before he did anything. When I got to Reynolds street I pulled up next to the red Mustang to first make sure that it was a girl driving the car, and second to ask the young lady if she knew anyone by the name of Albert Ferguson or better known as AL. The young lady said" Yeah I know Al he lives in the apartment above me over there at Eagle Ridge". I then asked her if she would mind coming down to the station so I could ask her a few questions. She said that was ok and asked me if something was wrong with Al. I told her to just follow me and I would explain everything at the station. I first took her to the lab to see if she recognized the dead body or any type of clothing on the body. As she first glanced at the body she started screaming and yelling " Oh my God Al Al". I said are you sure this is Albert Ferguson. She turned and looked at me still screaming and yelling, and said" Yes I'm sure because that was the last thing I saw him wearing". I said when was the last time you saw Al. She said" About a week ago". I said OK. Then I asked her to come to my office so I could ask her a few questions. When we got into my office I just asked her just up why she was looking for Al two days ago up at Greasy Lake. She told me that she had been looking for Al for a couple of days. She said that they were pretty goods friends and hung out frequently. She also said Al liked to go up to Greasy Lake and hang out from time to time, but the group that he hung around was a tough crowd. I asked her if there was anyone specific that she thinks might have done this to Al. She said" Yes there is guy who drives a Chevy a very rough looking character. He and Al got in a pretty heated exchangement about a week ago". I asked her if she had any idea about what that heated exchangement was about, and she told me that it was usually about drugs or money. I then asked her to give me a description of this guy. The young lady described this guy to be freakishly large almost like a ogre, and that he had Dark Brown hair and he also always wore a Cardinals hat. After she described this guy it sounded a lot like the guy Mike and his buddies got in a fight with. I knew where to find this guy and it was also around 2:00 pm anyways. So I made my way down to Big Al's like I do everyday except for today I was going there for another reason.

As I pulled up to Big Al's I saw the big ogre standing outside. I wasn't really sure how I was going to ask this guy if he knew Albert so I just went for it. I went straight up to him and told him that I was Detective Dakota Hill44 with the Union County Police Department and that I wanted to ask him a few questions about the murder of Albert Ferguson. He just looked at me and said" What about it". I said will I have people telling me that you are the one who that has killed him. He said " I don't know nothing about that. I told him that I beg to differ and to get his ass in the car. Surprisingly he did and I made my way back to the station. The whole ride back this little punk was telling me how I would regret this and wait tell he saw me out the street. I just didn't pay any attention to him. We had arrived back at the station and I immediately took this guy to one our interagating rooms. I did not want him to feel comfortable at all. I first asked this guy what his name was and he told me his name was Alex Burke. I then asked him how he knew Albert. He said "Albert use to hangout with his crew". I asked what happened why did Albert stopping hanging around them? He said "he just did". I then began to tell him that we had finger prints of his that were on Alberts body. I said this to maybe trick him and maybe he would come clean. He told me that he wasn't buying that bullshit he knows how this detective thing goes. I realized this guy knew how to handle himself and I was probably not going to any information from him, but I just had a hunch that he was the killer. I had to find some way to get him to come clean or I would have to realize this guy. Then I remebered the tire-iron that Mike used to knock this guy out with the other night. I knew it was a long shot but maybe the blood that was on the tire-iron would match with any of the blood found on the clothes of Alberts body. I went down to the lab and asked them to run test for the blood on the tire-iron, and the blood that was on Alberts jacket to see if they matched. A couple hours later one of the members on my team that was working in the lab came into my office and told me they found a match with both blood samples. I then knew we got the guy we were looking for. I then walked down to the room that Alex Burke was sitting in and told him that he was under arrest for the murder of Albert Ferguson, and then I read him his Miranda Rights. I let one of the officers on duty take him down to cell. I then went to my office and drank to my victory.

A Rose For Emily

It was around 4:30 when I got the call that they found a dead body in Miss Emily's house. My first thought was who could it have been, and why did this sweet old woman do such a horrible thing. As I arrived to Miss Emily's house I see that almost the whole town was standing outside her house. I knew she had her funeral service earlier today but that was sometime ago. I also knew everyone was just sticking around to be nosey because that was how this town was. Everyone knew everyone.

As soon as I stepped foot in the house I could smell the dead body. It smelt like it had been there for years, and who knew it probably had been. I walked up the stairs and into the room with the dead body. I could not believe what I saw. The more I observed the room I noticed she had a wedding dress and many other things that a bride would wear. I noticed that his suit and tie were carefully folded and hung next to him in the chair. All he had on was a nightshirt, as he lay there all rotted and dusted. Then I noticed the pillow that laid right beside him. It had a hair on it that was black and grey. This made me think that Miss Emily was the one who murdered this man, because she is the only one that lived in this house with black and grey hair.

I took the black hair as evidence and immediately left Miss Emily's and went straight to the station. I decided since I didn't know Miss Emily as well as many of the other people in town did, that I would ask the people around the town if Miss Emily might have had a relationship with anyone in the past. The only person they ever said she dated was Homer Barron. They also said that one day he just left and never came back. I found this piece of information to be very odd.

It wasn't until days later that an old man stepped foot into my office. He said that he used to work at the drug store down the street many years ago. He asked me about the body that was in Miss Emily's house the other day. Then he told me he might have some useful information about the body, and what he thinks happened to it. I told him to have a seat and let me know what was on his mind. The old man told me that one-day when he was working at the drug store that Miss Emily came in wanting to buy rat poison.  He said she didn't just get any type of rat poison, but she got Arsenic. I asked what was Arsenic, and he told me that it could kill anything up to an elephant. I then asked him who he thinks the body was. He told me he thought it was Homer Barron, and that Miss Emily used the rat poison to kill him one night. The old man stood up from the chair looked right at me and said “Don’t you think it is weird that one day a woman comes into the drug store wanting to buy rat poison, and the next day Homer Barron is never seen again".

After the old man left my office I knew who the dead body was and the killer. But to me there was no need to keep wasting my time and energy on a case that had no meaning. Miss Emily was dead, it wasn't like I could go down to her house and arrest her for killing the love of her life. It was obvious that the night he went over to her house he was going to say goodbye. But that was not what Miss Emily wanted. I mean this was the man she wanted to spend the rest of her life with. When she realized that he no longer loved her she had to find a way to keep him around. Her plan was to poison him and have him by her side forever. That secret room that no one had ever been into was Miss Emily's life. Everything she ever wanted was in that room.
